Watch Time
Watch time is the total accumulated minutes people spend watching your video content, not just how many people pressed play.
Watch time is the sum of all viewing time across every play of a video or a whole channel, measured in total minutes rather than as a percentage. A longer video watched halfway by many people can add up to more total watch time than a short video watched fully by fewer people, which is why it is a different number from completion rate.
YouTube has ranked channels partly on watch time for over a decade, and Instagram has confirmed watch time as one of its top Reels ranking signals. More watch time signals genuine interest and keeps people in the app longer, which every platform's algorithm rewards regardless of video length or format.
For a single video, track watch time alongside completion rate and average view duration to see the full picture. For a channel, look at the trend over months rather than any single upload, and resist padding video length purely to chase watch time: a bloated video most people abandon early loses on both metrics at once.
Examples
- A 3-minute video watched to the 90-second mark on average by 10,000 viewers generates 15,000 minutes of total watch time.
- Instagram named watch time and shares among its top Reels ranking signals in 2026, ahead of likes and comments.
